7 Free Tips for Social Media Marketing

The following tips will have you on your way to creating engaging content for your audience across your social media accounts. The following points relate to free and organic social media marketing tips and tricks.

1. Switch your Instagram to business

 

If you haven’t done so already, it’s important that your Instagram page is switched to a business account rather than a personal account. This is because an Instagram business account gives you more options to show your contact information and allows you to view insights on your Instagram followers and how they engage with the content on your account.

To convert a personal profile to a business account in Instagram;

  • Go to your profile and tap the hamburger icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap the gear icon to go to Settings. 
  • Tap Account.
  • Tap Switch to Professional Account.
  • Tap Business.
  • Add details, like your business category and contact information
  • Tap Done.

2. Know your target market

 

One of the key principles of successful social media marketing is coming up with consistent and relevant content that appeals to your followers and your ideal customer.

Though a lot of business owners don’t know what their follower’s demographics are.

On Facebook, a quick way to learn more about your followers is to head to the insights tab on your Facebook page.

In the insights tab, click on ‘People’ from the menu on the left. This page will give you breakdowns in both gender and age range, as well as location.

On Instagram, go to your profile and tap, go to insights and you will be able to navigate to the audience tab which will give you top locations, age range and gender data on your followers. 

 

3. Engage your community by asking them a question.

 

Now that you have an idea of who is following you, you can tailor your content to be more relevant to them. One great way to engage with your community on social media is to ask them a question.

It might be about something topical, it might be about a new product or service that you are thinking of developing.

People generally love to give their opinions, so get creative and start asking regular questions across your Facebook and Instagram profiles.

Some examples of this might be:

Do you prefer the beach or the city?

When is your favourite time to travel?

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

These types of questions evoke a response with your audience and helps you to build a relationship with them.

 

4. Tailor your content to your platform

 

There are some great tools available that allow you to create one post and put it out to your Instagram and Facebook pages in one go. This is a great time saver, though it should be used with caution.

As a rule of thumb, hashtags should only be used on Instagram posts, and links should only be used on Facebook posts.

Why? Because consumers on Instagram use hashtags to discover new content that interests them – this is not the case on Facebook.

However, Facebook allows you to use links which can be used to take your followers through to a website or landing page – Instagram doesn’t allow links to be clicked in a caption.

To save time and make your content relevant, use the same creative (image or video) and similar message, add hashtags to your Instagram post, then remove the hashtags for your Facebook post and add a link if it’s applicable.

5. Pin an important post

 

Did you know that you can ‘pin a post’ to the top of your business Facebook page? This means it will stay at the very top of your timeline.

Why would I do this, you may be wondering.

This helps you to highlight a special event or a significant post that you don’t want to get lost in your newsfeed.

To ‘pin’ a post just go to the post and click the top right-hand drop-down menu. Select ‘pin to top of page’. Facebook will then place that post at the top of your timeline.

When you want to ‘unpin’ it, just do the same thing, but in reverse. Go to the post and click the top right-hand drop-down menu. Select ‘unpin’. Facebook will then place it back in date order of your original post. Pretty cool, huh?

 

6. Schedule posts with Creator Studio

 

Remember how we mentioned that posting consistently is key? There is a way to achieve this without having to think about what to post every day.

To start with aim for 2 to 3 posts a week, and schedule these out at least a week in advance to give you time to consider the posts and make sure the look and feel of your page is consistent.

Facebook’s Creator Studio is a free tool you can use to schedule your Facebook and Instagram posts in one place. It also lays out what posts you have scheduled, in draft and published so you know where you are up to.

7. It’s not all about you

 

Remember that social media users are scrolling through Facebook or Instagram to be entertained, they’re not scrolling to be sold to.  

This is why it’s important to use the 80/20 rule when posting to your social media platforms.

That is, 80% of your posts are about content that is relevant and interesting to your audience, and 20% of your posts are about your product or service.

Break up your feed with lovely imagery or funny quotes and memes, and when you want to promote your product or service, do it in a way that isn’t so ‘sales pitchy’ and rather in a way that is more conversational and subtle, that way you’re not going to get your audience off side!
